Baileyana, Tangent & True Myth
Peacefulness Among The Vines
Imagine this: You are driving down a country road with your (adult) son, surrounded by vineyards. Coming to a yellow schoolhouse, turning up the driveway, parking, and exiting the car, you turn to your son and say, “so, this is where I went to school when I was a child.” You have just arrived at the Baileyana, Tangent & True Myth Tasting Room, only five miles from downtown San Luis Obispo. The old one room schoolhouse, built in 1909 to serve children of the local community, closed in the mid 1950s. Today this historical structure houses a comfortable wine tasting room. Still surrounded by agriculture and vineyards, expansive patios and bocce courts, this 100 year old schoolhouse no longer teaches readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmitic, but educates visitors on wine and viticulture, in a most relaxed, pastoral setting. Welcome to the Baileyana, Tangent & True Myth Tasting Room, you’re in for a treat.
Terroir, Terroir, Terroir
In real estate, the time honored saying is “location, location, location.” So, with vineyards and wine production, you can substitute location for terroir. And, this area, the coolest AVA in California, has terroir that is especially conducive to cool climate grape such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Gris, Albariño and others.
The Niven family are a force in SLO County, one of the original pioneers, planting vines back in 1973, and one of the first in California to plant Grüner Veltliner. With a winemaking team that has been together for 20 years, your visit to the tasting room at Baileyana will be a treat, one that will please the palate as you relax and enjoy the surrounding vistas and vineyards.
Karl, the tasting room manager, characterizes the wine-tasting experience as: “With a large variety of wines, it’s easy to find something for everyone,” and indeed there is. There is a varied selection, and what’s great, especially for locals, is that the wine menu will change every week or two, so you always have a different selection of five wines to choose from.
On a warm afternoon, you can’t do better than to bring your kids, dog and picnic, hang out on one of the inviting patios, and treat yourself to a wide selection of whites. You’ll find out why when your tasting attendant pours you a sample of the “Clone 530” Sauvignon Blanc, made from 45 year-old vines. In 2016 Baileyana was honored to be named by the San Luis Obispo New Times as “Best Winery in the County for White Wine,” and in 2017 came in second! But those aren’t the only recent accolades. Other recent recognition includes the following Robert Parker ratings:
• 2015 Baileyana SBAR Chardonnay (94 points).
• 2015 Baileyana SBAR Pinot Noir (90 points).
• 2013 Trenza Mosaico (90 points), a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah.
