Eberle’s Award Winning Wines Are Made With Experience
One of the first things you might find out about Eberle Winery is the fact that it is the longest continually-running family owned wine establishment in Paso Robles. The winery has been in business since 1979 when Gary Eberle bought 64-acres in the area, and decided to produce wines under his own label. With years of experience, Eberle releases a wide range of wines that receive accolades. In fact, every wine with the Eberle label has earned a gold medal, or better, in 2018.
Wine Godfather of Paso Robles
When Eberle decided to set up shop in the Paso Robles region, he was one of three people who helped draw the lines for the new appellation. Eberle is known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, which was first released in 1979, and also for its Rhone varietals. In addition, Eberle was the first winery in the United States to make a wine made from 100% Syrah fruit. When the varietal started to gain ground in the 90’s, the Wine Spectator labeled Eberle, “The Johnny Appleseed of Syrah.”
The Eberle Vineyard is located on 40 acres of land featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Muscat Canelli varietals. The winery also partners with other exceptional vineyards in the region. Eberle only uses fruit from Paso Robles. “We use Paso grapes to make Paso wines,” said Marcy Eberle, co-owner of the winery.
A Visit to Eberle
When you visit Eberle’s tasting room, be sure to look for the bronze boar statue. The word eberle means “small boar” in German, and it is considered good luck to rub the animal’s nose. The statue found at the tasting room is a replica of one cast in the 1600’s. (The original can be found at the Straw Market in Florence, Italy.)
Some of the wines to look for in the tasting room are the:
• 2017 Viognier – Double Gold and Best of Class, C.C. Wine Competition
• 2016 Barbera, a cult favorite which sells out quickly
• 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, expected to be released this fall
The Cabernet is the winery’s flagship wine. According to Eberle, “My husband says that Paso grows the best Cab in the state. It’s definitely his beverage of choice.”
While visiting the winery you can also take a tour of the underground caves with staff who know about Eberle and the region as a whole. The winery is committed to inviting visitors to both enjoy the wines and be educated about the wine making process at the same time.
When you visit the caves, you will see more than 2,000 barrels stacked to the ceiling with Eberle wines. The winery stores its wines in this cooler, less humid environment that enables owners to cut down on energy costs since no air conditioning is required.
The Wines That Won Gold
Twelve Eberle wines received awards at the 2018 Central Coast Wine Competition held at the Mid State Fair. Several received top honors. Here is a list of some of the wines that won gold:
• 2017 Viognier – Best of Class/Double Gold
• 2017 White Rhone Blend – Gold
• 2017 Muscat Canelli – Gold
• 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon – Gold
The 2016 Barbera, the 2016 Sangiovese, the 2016 Syrah, the 2016 Zinfandel and the 2015 Grenache also received recognition.
