Ultra-Fine, Limited-Production Wines from the Sta. Rita Hills
The emerging cool-climate Sta. Rita Hills region of Santa Barbara, a short distance from the Pacific Ocean, has become the de facto region for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. And, though it is a long distance from the West Texas Panhandle of Bill Foley’s roots, new roots have been put down by this entrepreneurial vineyard owner.
Foley may have cattle ranching in his blood, but he wanted to create a legacy for his family in the wine world. He purchased a winery in Santa Ynez, renaming it Lincourt Vineyards, in honor of his two daughters, Lindsay and Courtney. Then he created Foley Estates Vineyard and Winery located on nearly 500 acres, of which about 250 are planted with vineyards, in the Sta. Rita Hills of Santa Barbara. It is here where Foley Estates produces classic and highly regarded California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, in addition to Syrah. Winemaker Lorna Kreutz’s job is to show the best expression of the Foley vineyards, working with the fruit as nominally as possible. She spends much of her time in the vineyards throughout the year, making daily trips to the vineyard during harvest to determine when the fruit is ripe and ready to pick.
The latest Foley releases include the 2014 Rancho Santa Rosa Chardonnay which spent 17 months in oak, showing the Foley commitment to age worthy wines. Similarly the 2014 Rancho Santa Rosa Pinot Noir spent 18 months in 25% new French oak barrels. And the great thing about Foley if you’re a Pinot Noir lover is the ability to sample a diversity of Pinot Noir made with decidedly different clones and providing unique flavor profiles. For example, the just released 2014 line up includes the Foley 2014 T Anchor Ranch Pinot Noir which is all about the Pommard clone. The 2014 JA Ranch Pinot Noir embraces clones 113 and 115, while the 2014 Bar Lazy S Ranch Pinot Noir uses clone 2A. And the 2014 Barrel Select Pinot Noir is Massal clone. Each clone brings a different level of fruit, floral and perfume notes, structure and ageability, and it is up to you which one you will fall in love with.

Winemaker, Lorna Kreutz
Located in the heart of the famed Sta. Rita Hills AVA, the temperate coastal climate, south-facing hills and limestone soils amount to the “holy grail” of elements for producing world-class Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Foley knew he needed a winemaker who could exemplify this fruit and create wines in their likeness, and so Lorna Kreutz joined the team. With Pinot Noir as her first oenophilic love, Kreutz continues the Foley tradition of producing high quality wines produced from some of the best vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA.
