Mayo Family Wines
Mayo Family Wines Garner More Gold, Best of Class
Enjoy Medal-Winning Wines in a Fun, Unpretentious Atmosphere
Mayo Family Winery is a cheerful, comfortable, unpretentious place with seriously good wines, conveniently located in the heart of Sonoma Valley. The barnlike building is shaded with ancient oak trees, which also provide shade for the picnic area in the back.
The tasting room is roomy, airy and bright, with big windows that let in the warm Sonoma sunshine. A rock fireplace sits in one corner to warm the room on cooler days. In another corner, a large display case proudly showcases dozens of wine awards (And the wines are really good – more on that in a bit). A tall, glossy wooden bar spans the room. There is a private room in the back to accommodate large groups and private tastings.
These are Really Nice Folks, and They are Dog-Friendly, Too!
The tasting room team is made up of friendly, knowledgeable and absolutely delightful folks! Most of them have been with Mayo Family Winery for years, so they know the wines, the history of the winery and many of their customers by name. Feel free to bring your dog!
Let’s Talk About The Wines
Mayo Family Winery produces only 5000 cases of wine per year. These wines are all made from single vineyards and are meticulously crafted in several small batches. There is a wine for every palate here!
The wines are only available at the winery and on their website – they are not nationally distributed. Tasting fees are nominal: $10 and $15. Tasting is complimentary for wine club members.
Sonoma County Harvest Fair Gold Medal Winners!
Mayo Family Winery recently cleaned up at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair, raking in two Best of Class medals, eight gold medals, 18 silver medals and 18 bronze medals. That is quite an accomplishment!
I had the pleasure of tasting a couple of the medal winners and I have to agree with the judges on this – these are seriously good wines!
BEST OF CLASS MEDAL – 2014 Merlot, The Francis Riggins Vineyard, Sonoma Valley ($40): Classic Merlot! Aromas and flavors of black cherry, cocoa, mocha, vanilla and savory herbs all play nicely together from the first sip, through the sexy, silky mouthfeel and on through the long finish. GOLD MEDAL - 2013 Grenache, Kunde Ranch Vineyard, Sonoma Valley “Jeffrey’s Cuvee” ($40): Mouthwatering aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, Christmas spice and pepper continue as flavors in the velvety, juicy mouth. Long, delicious finish.
