Elegant Italian Wines, Old World Traditions
Known for their rare Italian varietals, Pelletiere Estate is located in the heart of the Willow Creek district on the westside of Paso Robles. Dedicated to preserving its rich heritage and land, their wines are 100 percent estate grown. With the first grapes planted in 1993, the winery has been committed to sustainability for over 25 years, at the forefront of their business model.
“We love varieties unknown to our area and like to explore rustic, old world techniques of wine making,” said Owner/Vintner Janis Denner.
Specializing in Italian varieties such as Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, the winery has just expanded their plantings of Lagrein, an ultra rare and rustic Italian varietal, full bodied and dense with aromas of black raspberries and plums. Additionally, Sicilian wine Agliwanico will make its debut soon. Utilizing whole cluster fermentation, grapes are fermented with the stem, moderating tannins in the wine and helping absorb acidity. The end product yields a voluptuous mouth feel, with herbal character, as exemplified in their 2014 Nebbiolo, muscular, with dark cherry, smoke, and wild berry notes.
The winery also incorporates the use of ancient amphora winemaking for their Sangiovese, a practice dating back over 6000 years. The porosity of the clay increases the oxygen exposure to wines, accelerating the tertiary flavor development, which includes softening tannins and increasing aromas. With bracing structure and generous juicy and concentrated fruit, their newly released Sangiovese is a perfect wine for the Willow Creek District.
Three Generations of Excellence
Inspired by her own Italian background (and named to honor her father), Denner founded the winery with a deep respect for family, a love of food and wine, and the joys of collaborative effort. Their wines are a reflection of this fourth-generation family, working alongside her mother MaryAnn, daughter Morgan, and granddaughter Mayson, namesake of their Rose wine.
“It is exciting to work with individuals with so much talent that also possess the same drive, commitment to quality, and future winery goals,” said Denner.
Committed to the traditions of fine winemaking, the winery hopes to develop a legacy for future family generations. With a love and respect for wine, Denner believes wine should be delicious and representative of its origin. Pelletiere Estate wines are truly of the earth, putting more emphasis on vineyard quality, than on vilification technique.
