A Taste of Tuscany in Sonoma
Wanting to replicate the bucolic vistas of his native Tuscany on a secluded mountainside in Sonoma, San Francisco restauranteur Lorenzo Petroni of North Beach Restaurant fame discovered his soaring hilltop estate high up in the canyons of Moon Mountain in the Spring of 1992. A hand-shake secured the land, and soon after, Lorenzo was forming the steep vineyard terraces using volcanic rocks found on-site. Grape cuttings were flown in from Montalcino, Italy along with 1,200 olive trees to create a 37-acre retreat from which Lorenzo could realize his dream of being the first California vintner to grow the Tuscan clone ‘Sangiovese Grosso’ in Sonoma soil. The first vintage was produced in 1998, and still is in production today under the name Poggio alla Pietra (Hill of Rocks), corner stoning their boutique collection of estate wines. The classic Brunello-esque wine boasts notes of dark plum, red and sour cherry which open to complex savory and gamey characteristics complemented by a rich, evenly textured body where dry, fine tannins prevail. As done with each vineyard block, every organic vine is carefully pruned for optimum crop yield to ensure ripe, concentrated fruit. With veteran Winemaker Martin Mackenzie now at the helm, his skilled winemaking approach of “less is more” has helped elevate the vineyard to achieve an impressive 13 wines scoring 90+ points in Parker’s Wine Advocate. Petroni also crafts micro-productions of a mountain-style Cabernet Sauvignon [Double Gold, San Francisco Chronicle International Wine Competition] along with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah.

Discover Luxury Food and Wine Pairings in the Cave
Directly under their hillside vineyard, an elaborate network of private tasting niches chiseled from 18,000 square feet of cave wall plays host to a series of high-touch, intimate tastings of Petroni’s small-lot wines. Hosted by-appointment, each wine tasting includes a sample of their estate organic olive oil served with fresh, local artisan bread. The seasonal food pairing menus highlight produce from the estate garden, along with meats and cheeses from neighboring ranches.
New this summer, the Sunday Brunch Pairing served 10:30am- 1:30pm on Sundays through September acts as primer to the fine dining caliber of wine country cuisine that awaits you. Created by their in-house chef, guests begin with a twist on a brunch classic- a Chardonnay and Bacon Bloody Mary Shooter- followed by Crispy Brioche French Toast with Strawberry-Rhubarb Compote and (real) Maple Syrup alongside Eggs Benedict with “Smoasted” (smoked then roasted) Salmon. Three of their highly-limited wines are served in this decadent midday pairing for $65 per person for club members and $75 per person for non-members.
The 3-Course and 5-Course Food and Wine Pairings [$95 and $195 per person] continue this season in a private alcove of the cave and are a must-taste when visiting. Savor their Reserve Chardonnay paired to a House-made Burrata drizzled with Petroni’s Estate Olive Oil, Grilled Asparagus and Dried Citrus as just one example of many dishes which beautifully complement their wines.
For those seeking a wine-only tasting, look no further than the Vault Tasting. Designed for a serious wine collector, this unique tasting at $85 per person with four-person minimum is conducted in an old bank vault Lorenzo installed when digging the cave. Housing an impressive collection of each vintage from 1998 to present, your host will curate a bespoke vertical tasting just for you, based on your varietal preferences, with library wines and their current release counterparts.
