Robert Mondavi Winery

When Robert Mondavi founded his winery in 1966, his vision was to create exceptional wines that would stand among the world’s finest. He believed that great wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil, the climate and the careful stewardship of those precious resources. As the home for his winery, Robert Mondavi chose the To Kalon Vineyard in the heart of the Napa Valley. This first-growth vineyard, located in Oakville, California, is renowned for producing some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon wines in the world, as well as for its Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from which Mr. Mondavi crafted his signature wine, Fumé Blanc.

“Walking through To Kalon, admiring its contours and vines, smelling the richness of its soil, I knew this was a very special place. It exuded an indefinable quality I could not describe, a feeling that was almost mystical.”
— Robert Mondavi

More than 50 years later, the winery continues to pursue Robert Mondavi’s philosophy with the same passion, moving forward with technology and programs that break barriers and open new frontiers for winemaking even as they respect time-honored winemaking traditions. “The winemaking and winegrowing teams are really one team,” says Geneviève Janssens, Chief Winemaker. “We have the same mission—to produce wines of great density and rich fruit character, wines of elegance and finesse that complement food. In this way, we combine the structure of the finest French wines with powerful fruit, California-style.”

Robert Mondavi believed that the path to a gracious lifestyle leads through the appreciation of wine, food, and art, and that the Napa Valley could be the center for that lifestyle. One of the first wineries to offer tours, tastings, culinary and art programs, Robert Mondavi Winery’s celebrated visitor programs still reflect this passion for wine education and offer experiences for everyone from the novice to the most discriminating connoisseur.

Visitors can sample hand-crafted, winery-only wines from the stunning Vineyard Tasting Room, or linger on the patios, where beautiful views of the To Kalon Vineyard invite guests to sip, savor and connect with friends and family. The Signature Tour takes visitors on a comprehensive journey from grape to glass, while the Discovery Tour offers a “sip and stroll” easy walking tour suitable for the entire family. Guests can indulge in the leisurely Harvests of Joy wine-pairing lunch, or join the Garden-to-Table dinner program, where guests work with the winery chefs to create a meal from garden-fresh produce.

The arts are a focus of programming at Robert Mondavi Winery, with rotating exhibitions of painting and photography in addition to the permanent collection of paintings and sculpture. The Margrit Mondavi Summer Concert Series, now in its 49th year, brings legendary artists to the winery for outdoor concerts in an intimate setting with the incomparable background of the Mayacamas Mountains. Concert-goers can choose casual seating on the lawn, reserve patio seating, or dinner seating among the vineyard rows for a magical evening under the stars. Proceeds from the summer concerts benefit the Napa Valley Unified School District high school music programs.

With over 50 years of leadership in Napa Valley viticulture, winemaking and hospitality programs, Robert Mondavi Winery has continued to evolve, consistently pursuing its founder’s vision of excellence, innovation and ever-higher quality.
