Flagship Beers: Pliny the Elder Double IPA
and Pliny the Younger Triple IPA
Pliny the Elder was a Roman author, philosopher, and naturalist who wrote about hops and possibly gave it the botanical name of Lupus Salictarius, currently known as Humulus Lupulus. In honor of such a crucial ingredient to IPA, Russian River Brewing Company named their double IPA after him.
Pliny the Elder is brewed with Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ and Simcoe hops. It is well-balanced with malt, hops and a slightly bitter taste with a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus and pine.
Following the overwhelming success of Pliny the Elder, brewmaster Vinnie Cilurzo decided to experiment by increasing the levels of malt, hops and alcohol in the original recipe. The end result is Pliny the Younger, named after Pliny the Elder’s nephew and adopted son.
Pliny the Younger is considered a “triple” IPA as it contains almost triple the amount of hops and higher alcohol. The 2018 recipe finishes remarkably dry for the amount of malt and is full of deep, rich hop flavors, bitterness and aromatics. The hops used in this year’s recipe are of excellent quality, featuring varieties of Simcoe, Warrior, Chinook, Centennial, Amarillo, CTZ, Comet and Azacca. Brewed since 2005 as a special winter seasonal beer, Pliny the Younger is only brewed once a year and released in February, rain or shine. Due to its limited production, the beer is available on draft at the brewpub for just two weeks a year. Both connoisseurs and the curious stand in line for hours to taste this distinctive interpretation of a triple IPA!
