History & Family
The history of Sutter Home Winery dates back to 1874, when a Swiss-German immigrant named John Thomann established a small winery and distillery in the heart of California’s Napa Valley. After John died in 1900, his heirs sold the winery and the fine Victorian home to another Swiss family, the Leuenbergers. The Leuenbergers rechristened the estate Sutter Home (after Lina Leuenberger’s father, John A. Sutter). The advent of Prohibition in 1918 shut down Sutter Home, and it remained abandoned until 1947, when it was purchased by John and Mario Trinchero, Italian immigrant brothers whose family had long been active in the Italian wine business. Relocating from New York City to the small town of St. Helena, the Trincheros began producing a diverse assortment of Napa Valley wines.
The family believed in the value of hard work, ingenuity, humility and integrity that have characterized them ever since. Each member of the family was a part of the business, mother Mary kept the books, children Vera and Roger helped on the bottling line, and brother Bob worked with his father Mario and Uncle John, cleaning out tanks and barrels. The family’s unity kept Sutter Home together and eventually made it the success it is today. With its creation of White Zinfandel in the early 1970s and the introduction of high-quality, affordably priced varietal wines during the 1980s and ‘90s, Sutter Home in the Napa Valley became a household name and the second largest, independent family-run winery in the United States.
