V. Sattui Winery ... Taste Napa Valley History
V. Sattui Winery is one of the first wineries to re-establish in the Napa Valley. Vittorio Sattui started the winery in 1885 after emigrating from Genoa, Italy. Vittorio was forced to shut down winery operations when Prohibition went into effect, and the historic winery lay dormant until 1976, when Vittorio’s great-grandson, Dario, realized his dream of resurrecting the family business in St. Helena in the heart of the Napa Valley.
This Place is All That and A Bag of Chips!
Unlike some of its newer, glossier neighboring wineries and tasting salons (and authentic-looking castle, also owned by Dario Sattui), a visit to V. Sattui Winery is like stepping back to an earlier, simpler time in the Napa Valley – a time when tasting fees were minimal (if there even were tasting fees!), wines were reasonably priced and you could buy a bottle or three, sit down outside the winery and enjoy a tasty picnic. This place is all that and a bag of chips, and at V. Sattui they have several different types of chips, along with anything else you could ever imagine in an Italian deli!
Stop, Sip, Mangia, Relax and Stay a While!
The winery and tasting rooms are housed in the historic buildings, surrounded by two large, grassy picnic areas. Dozens of picnic tables are scattered around the property, inviting visitors to stop, relax, eat, drink and soak up the Napa Valley sunshine. Ancient oak trees, along with a variety of other local trees, provide dappled shade for the property on hot days.
There are three tasting rooms – the main tasting room, deli and gift shop in one building, the Reserve Tasting Room in the iconic stone tower, and a separate tasting room in the cellar that features samples pulled directly from the barrels.
A Napa Valley Institution
The main tasting room is a Napa Valley institution – it has always featured a wide selection of wines for tasting and for sale, an absolutely amazing deli – the sandwiches and salads are off the hook – and the selection of olive oils, sauces, mustards, olives and condiments is deliciously mindboggling. Let’s not forget the gift shop! V. Sattui’s gift shop is the perfect place to shop as you sip – take home everything from apparel and logo items to food, glassware and wine accessories, and everything in between.
All of this bounty is featured in a large room, with open-beam ceilings and well-worn hardwood floors. The deli sits front and center, with its expansive cheese counter and overhead displays of hanging cheese and salumi. The tasting bars are usually bustling with thirsty visitors. V. Sattui’s staff is friendly, knowledgeable and unpretentious. They happily serve a generous selection of award-winning wines – sold only at the winery – sure to please even the most finicky palate. V. Sattui wines are not sold in stores.
