Wild Horse Winery
Class in a Glass
Named as an homage to the wild mustangs that once roamed the nearby hills, Wild Horse Winery was founded in 1981 by legendary winemaker and visionary Ken Volk. The mustangs are gone today, (although you may catch a glimpse of Dolly or Salvador, the winery llamas), and the property, surrounded by farmland and vineyards, offers a relaxing, pastoral setting in which to discover and enjoy select, small lot production wines that can only be tasted or purchased through the winery or wine club membership.
You will be hard pressed to find a more relaxing setting, surrounded by farmland, tree lined lanes and vineyards. Leave the outside world behind, as you drive up the road, arriving at Wild Horse Winery’s tasting room-to begin an adventure in wine. The tasting room is rustic, warm and comfortable, and (most likely) Pattie will be welcoming you…..with a smile and infectious personality, as she helps guide your journey through the selection of Wild Horse’s boutique wine portfolio.
Taste the Difference
Sourcing fruit from Monterey through the Santa Barbara area, winemakers Todd Ricard and Kip Lorenzetti create wines of personality and distinction, including a few varietals that are not commonly found-and will tease and delight your palate. All tastings consist of a selection of six wines. You may want to choose an all white tasting, which will include Malvasia Bianca, a grape that is not commonly grown, and one that Pattie describes as being “Hawaii in a glass.” Among the red tasting, there is Blaufrankisch, an estate grown grape, and another intriguing, not commonly found varietal. You may also create your own tasting of reds and whites if you prefer. However, the piece d’ resistance, and what Wild Horse is known for, is their Pinot Noir! Try six Reserve Pinots, grapes sourced from some of SLO and Santa Barbara Country’s premier vineyards. Smooth and elegant, once tasting through this selection, you will have enjoyed true class in a glass.
For an elevated tasting experience, and to truly explore and compare the Pinots of Wild Horse, reserve the “Pinot on the Patio” tasting. This special experience (advance reservations essential), will give you the opportunity to compare each of the Pinots side by side, along with four specially chosen cheeses to compliment the tasting. You will be hard pressed to find a more enjoyable way to relish and compare these small production stylish wines.
For a behind the scenes look at what goes on at a winery, reserve (weekends only) a “Grape to Glass” tour. This fun, educational experience will walk you through the vineyards, winery, barrel room (including barrel tasting), ending with a special wine tasting; you will also “meet and greet” Wild Horse’s two resident Llamas! This tour will give you an appreciation of the grower’s and winemaker’s art-and how exquisite wine is created and brought to YOU!
