Titus Winery – Hidden in Plain Sight

Titus Vertical by Shannon McNamara

Located on the Silverado Trail, at the base of Howell Mountain, Titus Vineyards sits among and overlooks an expansive vista. The land has a farming history dating back to the 1870s, with the first-generation Titus family taking over owner and stewardship in 1968. Grapes from some of the Napa Valley’s most esteemed wineries (Beaulieu and Charles Krug being two) have been sourced from the land, attesting to the high quality of the fruit. As you drive along the Trail, you may just pass by the understated yet elegant and inviting tasting room-but don’t!

This is one of those special wineries where you could hang out all day, staring at the vineyards and hills in front of you, sipping elegant wines, and learning the history of this second-generation family winery now run by brothers Eric and Phillip Titus.

Eric & Phillip Titus

Phillip (director of winemaking and head winemaker at Chappellet) and his brother Eric, (Titus’ GM and Vineyard Operations Manager) have taken this 50-acre estate vineyard to the next level, producing highly rated, sophisticated wines.

Specializing in Bordeaux single varietals and blends, Titus’ wines check the boxes of being approachable yet quite ageable. My personal favorites were the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, although there wasn’t a wine that wasn’t elegant, expressive, well-rounded, and with distinctive aromas. However, in an area known for Cabernet Sauvignon, it was a delight to find two varietals that so well reflected the differences and nuances of two other Bordeaux varietals.

Visiting Titus is one of those special experiences where the wine, view, and especially hospitality blend together so that as you leave you are already planning your return visit.

On a beautiful spring day, it was enchanting to sit on the deck, with a light whispering breeze, sipping award-winning wines, and being hosted, from the moment of entry, by a team that defines the word “hospitality.” Make a reservation for your next visit to Napa-you won’t be disappointed.
