When approaching the property at Brecon Estate, it’s apparent that nothing about the place is an afterthought. From a cantilevered tasting terrace thrust under an ancient live oak that anchors landscaping below, to rammed earth walls and a cedar-slatted façade that welcome the outdoors inside. If there are contemplative aspects, they serve to calm the mind and compliment the winery’s focus on the reason for its existence, and that is wine.
Far from a large volume producer, Brecon prefers to create their wine with estate grapes in small batches, where it is served and sold only in their Westside Tasting Room. “We have the oldest Cab vines growing in modern, yet warm surroundings. The inside bar provides an al fresco experience, and the entire wall slides open in view of 300-year-old oaks. It’s a very pleasant spot,” said Damian Grindley, who enjoys a host of wine awards and 99-point wines to his credit. “Brecon is all about being local. Our grapes are five or ten minutes away by tractor – Westside, with a sense of place.”
