Among the most intriguing aspects of what makes for great wines are the environmental factors that are referred to as terroir, or “a sense of place.” In all of California, Edna Valley is special. considered the coolest climate of all. It was here in 1973 that Jack and Catharine Niven chose to plant the area’s first winegrapes in their Paragon Vineyard, and it’s here where their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes thrived. Not only was their venture successful, Jack was instrumental in laying the foundation for the Edna Valley AVA nine years later.
Baileyana’s tasting room is equally extraordinary. Formerly Independence Schoolhouse, this 110-year-old, 850-square-foot wooden structure was carefully restored and much of its former features preserved. Today, the cheerful yellow building draws visitors from all around to sip, linger, inhale the view, and play a game of bocce or two during the golden hour.
