SIFF Saturdays – January 30:

Canada’s THE NEW CORPORATION: THE UNFORTUNATELY NECESSARY SEQUEL from directors Joel Bakan and Jennifer Abbott. The film reveals how the corporate takeover of society is being justified by the sly rebranding of corporations as socially conscious entities. From gatherings of corporate elites in Davos, to climate change and spiraling inequality, the rise of the ultra-right leaders to COVID-19 and racial injustice, the film looks at corporations’ devastating power. Countering this is a groundswell of resistance worldwide as people take to the streets in pursuit of justice and the planet’s future. In the face of spiraling inequality, climate change, and the hollowing out of democracy, the film is a cry of social justice, deeper democracy, and transformative solutions. A video introduction to the film is expected from the filmmakers. The film is available at SIFF Saturdays THE NEW CORPORATION.

SIFF Saturdays – February 27:

A U.S. Premiere, Spain’s MY HEART GOES BOOM (EXPLOTA! EXPLOTA!) is from director Nacho Álvarez.  This film has been nominated for numerous 2021 Spanish cinema awards including Best Lead Actress, Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Score. An infectious, joyful journey through the greatest hits of the incomparable Italian singer Raffaella Carrà, the film follows Maria, a bride who just fled her own wedding in Rome to return to her home in Spain. As she brings color to the grey Spain of the 1970s by becoming a starlet of the biggest TV musical, her quest for personal freedom will go hand in hand with the explosion of the long-time censorship imposed by the regime. In Spanish with English subtitles. The film is available at SIFF Saturdays: MY HEART GOES BOOM!

SIFF2021 Virtual Film Festival: March 24-28:
